This week has been quite emotional as we have been looking at the experiences of evacuees during WWII. The children learnt about the reason for evacuations and discussed how the thousands of children who were evacuated would have felt and what they might have experienced. Despite being a sad thing, the children were able to realise how important it was to evacuate into safer areas and even considered how, for many evacuees, it was an exciting adventure and a chance to experience new things.
The children then watched a short video compilation of photos and recordings from evacuees (complete with emotional, heart-wrenching music!). The video really helped Year 5 empathise with the evacuee children and, despite a fair few tears and wet tissues, helped them to complete their work creating speech and thought bubbles to go with pictures of evacuees. All the children in Year 5 demonstrated great empathy and maturity when learning about such an important, emotive topic.
